Home of the World's Greatest Elephant Gathering
Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka's North Central Province is the stage for one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth — 'The Gathering'. Each year between July and October, as the surrounding jungle dries out, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the ancient Minneriya Tank to drink, bathe, and graze on the lush grass that emerges as the water level drops. At its peak, up to 300 elephants can be seen simultaneously — bulls sparring, mothers nursing calves, and young elephants playing in the shallows. No other place on earth offers a comparable concentration of wild Asian elephants.
The Gathering — A Natural Wonder
The Gathering at Minneriya is a seasonal phenomenon driven by the ancient Minneriya Tank — a 2nd-century reservoir built by King Mahasena. As the dry season progresses from July to October, the receding water exposes vast areas of fresh green grass that attract elephants from across the region. The spectacle builds gradually through July and August, reaching its peak in September when the tank is at its lowest. Watching hundreds of elephants interact — playing, bathing, and grazing — against the backdrop of the ancient tank and surrounding jungle is an experience that ranks among the greatest wildlife encounters in Asia.
Wildlife Beyond Elephants
While elephants are the star attraction, Minneriya supports a rich diversity of wildlife year-round. Toque macaques and grey langurs are common in the forest edges, and the park is home to sambar deer, spotted deer, and the elusive sloth bear. The Minneriya Tank is a superb birdwatching site, attracting painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, lesser adjutants, and large flocks of cormorants. The park has recorded over 160 bird species, and the open grasslands around the tank are excellent for spotting raptors.
Kaudulla & the Cultural Triangle
Minneriya sits at the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, making it easy to combine with the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa (25 km east), Sigiriya (30 km west), and Dambulla (40 km south-west). The adjacent Kaudulla National Park shares the same elephant population — when Minneriya's water level is high, elephants migrate to Kaudulla, and rangers can advise on which park is best on any given day. The nearby town of Habarana is the ideal base for exploring both parks and the Cultural Triangle sites.

Tips for Visiting Minneriya
Time Your Visit for September
The Gathering peaks in September when the tank is at its lowest. If you can only visit once, September gives the highest chance of seeing hundreds of elephants simultaneously.
Take the Afternoon Safari
Elephants move to the tank in the late afternoon as the day cools. The 3 PM safari consistently produces the best sightings and the most dramatic light for photography.
Ask Rangers About Kaudulla
Elephant movement between Minneriya and Kaudulla is dynamic. Ask your jeep driver or the park rangers which tank has the most elephants that day before entering.
Bring a Long Lens
Jeeps must maintain distance from the herd. A 300–400mm lens will let you capture individual elephants and family interactions from a respectful distance.
Combine with Sigiriya
Minneriya and Sigiriya are just 30 km apart. A two-day itinerary — Sigiriya in the morning, Minneriya in the afternoon — is one of Sri Lanka's classic combinations.
Stay Quiet in the Jeep
Loud voices and sudden movements disturb the elephants and cause them to move away. Keep noise to a minimum and let the wildlife come to you.
