Why Visit Tangalle?
Tangalle is where Sri Lanka's south coast slows down. Unlike the busier resorts to the west, Tangalle's collection of bays — Medaketiya, Marakolliya, Rekawa — remain largely undeveloped, offering long stretches of golden sand backed by casuarina trees and lagoons. The area is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Asia, and the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project runs nightly watches that bring visitors face-to-face with nesting leatherbacks and green turtles.
Rekawa Turtle Watching
Rekawa Beach, 15 km east of Tangalle town, is one of Sri Lanka's most significant turtle nesting sites. Five species — including the giant leatherback — come ashore between March and August. The community-run conservation project offers guided night watches; rangers locate nesting turtles and allow small groups to observe from a respectful distance. Proceeds fund local conservation and community livelihoods.
Marakolliya & Medaketiya Beaches
Marakolliya is a 3 km strip of deserted beach backed by a lagoon — ideal for long walks, birdwatching, and wild swimming. Medaketiya, closer to town, has a handful of guesthouses and restaurants right on the sand. Both beaches are far less visited than Unawatuna or Mirissa, making them perfect for travellers seeking solitude.
Mulkirigala Rock Temple
A 30-minute drive inland brings you to Mulkirigala, a dramatic rock monastery rising 200 metres above the surrounding jungle. Seven cave temples cut into the cliff face contain ancient murals and reclining Buddha statues. The climb to the summit dagoba rewards with panoramic views over the southern plains — a highlight of any Tangalle visit.

Book turtle watch early
Rekawa turtle watches are limited to small groups. Book through the conservation project website at least a week ahead in peak season.
Walk Marakolliya at dawn
The lagoon-backed beach is magical at sunrise — flamingos, herons, and almost no other visitors. Bring binoculars.
Swim at Goyambokka
Goyambokka beach, just west of town, has calmer water than the main bay and is the safest swimming spot in the area.
Try buffalo curd and treacle
Tangalle is famous for its buffalo curd — thick, creamy, and served with kithul treacle. Every roadside stall sells it fresh.
Visit Mulkirigala early
The rock temple is cooler and quieter before 9 am. The climb takes about 20 minutes and is steep — wear shoes with grip.
Respect the ocean
Tangalle's open bays face the Indian Ocean directly. Even in calm season, waves can be powerful — never swim alone.
