Blue Whale Watching
Mirissa is the undisputed whale-watching capital of Sri Lanka and one of the best places on Earth to see blue whales — the largest animals ever to have lived. Boats depart at dawn from Mirissa Harbour, heading south into the deep waters of the Indian Ocean. Sightings of blue whales are common from December to April, with sperm whales, Bryde's whales, and pods of spinner dolphins frequently encountered on the same trip. Choose operators with a marine biologist on board and a no-harassment policy.
Coconut Tree Hill & The Beach
Mirissa's most photographed spot is Coconut Tree Hill — a small promontory draped in leaning coconut palms that juts into the turquoise sea at the eastern end of the bay. The short climb rewards visitors with panoramic views of the crescent beach below, best at sunrise when the light turns the ocean gold. The main beach itself is ideal for swimming in the morning before afternoon swells build, and a string of beach shacks serve fresh seafood, smoothies, and Sri Lankan rice and curry.
Surfing & Water Sports
Mirissa offers consistent surf from October to April, with the main beach break suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. Secret Beach, a quieter cove west of the headland, is ideal for snorkelling among reef fish and sea turtles. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and night snorkelling tours are available through local operators. The nearby Weligama Bay, just 10 km west, is famous as one of the world's best learn-to-surf destinations with gentle, long-rolling waves.
