Why Visit Bentota?
Bentota occupies a narrow peninsula between the Indian Ocean and the Bentota River, giving it a unique geography that makes it Sri Lanka's premier water sports destination. The lagoon formed by the river is perfectly sheltered for jet-skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and river safaris, while the ocean beach offers swimming and sunbathing. The town is also home to some of Sri Lanka's most architecturally significant hotels, designed by the legendary Geoffrey Bawa.
Water Sports on the Lagoon
The Bentota River lagoon is the best place in Sri Lanka for water sports. Jet skis, windsurfers, water skis, and banana boats are all available for hire, and the sheltered water makes it safe for beginners. Several operators offer wakeboarding and kitesurfing lessons. The lagoon is also excellent for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at a more leisurely pace.
Bentota River Safari
A boat safari up the Bentota River reveals a world of mangroves, monitor lizards, kingfishers, and crocodiles. The river winds through a protected wetland reserve that is home to over 60 species of bird. Most tours last two hours and include stops at a cinnamon plantation and a traditional boat-building yard — a fascinating glimpse into rural Sri Lankan life.
Geoffrey Bawa's Architecture
Bentota is the spiritual home of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect. His masterpiece, the Lunuganga estate, is a 25-acre garden property on the Dedduwa Lake that Bawa transformed over 50 years into a living work of art. Now open to visitors and guests, Lunuganga is a pilgrimage site for architecture and garden lovers. The nearby Brief Garden, created by Bawa's friend Bevis Bawa, is equally extraordinary.
