Why Visit Kalkudah?
Kalkudah is one of Sri Lanka's best-kept secrets — a perfectly sheltered bay on the east coast where the water is so shallow and calm that you can wade 50 metres from shore and still be knee-deep. The beach is backed by a fringe of coconut palms and faces a protected bay that blocks the open-ocean swell, creating conditions more like a lagoon than a beach. Adjacent Passekudah bay is equally beautiful and slightly more developed, with a handful of luxury resorts.
Swimming & Snorkelling
The calm, clear water at Kalkudah is ideal for swimming at any skill level. The bay's natural protection from ocean swells means there are no dangerous currents or waves. Snorkellers will find patches of coral and reef fish in the deeper water towards the bay's edges. The water visibility is exceptional — often exceeding 15 metres — making it one of the best snorkelling bays on the east coast.
Passekudah Bay
Just a short walk around the headland, Passekudah is Kalkudah's slightly more developed neighbour. Several international resort hotels line the beach, and the bay is equally calm and beautiful. The two bays together form one of the finest beach destinations on the east coast. Passekudah is better for water sports — kayaking, paddleboarding, and glass-bottom boat rides are all available.
Batticaloa & the Singing Fish
The city of Batticaloa, 35 km south, is famous for its 'singing fish' — a mysterious musical sound that rises from the lagoon on calm nights, audible only from a boat. The city's Dutch fort and lagoon are worth exploring, and the local Tamil culture and cuisine offer a fascinating contrast to the beach. The Kallady Bridge at sunset is one of the most photographed spots in the east.

Wade out at low tide
At low tide, the sandbar extends even further — you can walk 100 metres from shore in knee-deep water. Magical at sunrise.
Stay at Passekudah for comfort
Kalkudah has basic guesthouses; if you want a pool and restaurant, stay at one of the Passekudah resorts and walk to Kalkudah beach.
Watch the fishermen at dawn
Local fishermen launch their outrigger canoes from Kalkudah at first light — a beautiful scene and a chance to buy the freshest catch.
Bring mosquito repellent
The lagoon behind the beach breeds mosquitoes, especially at dusk. Apply repellent before sunset and use a net at night.
Combine with Nilaveli
Kalkudah and Nilaveli are both on the east coast — combine them in a single trip by travelling up the coast road.
Hear the singing fish
Ask a local boatman in Batticaloa to take you out on the lagoon on a calm night to hear the mysterious underwater music.
