Why Visit Nilaveli?
Nilaveli is consistently rated among the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka — and for good reason. The beach stretches for 10 uninterrupted kilometres, backed by coconut palms and a handful of low-key resorts. The water is exceptionally calm and clear from May to September, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Just 10 minutes offshore, Pigeon Island National Park protects one of Sri Lanka's best coral reefs, with blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and vibrant fish communities.
Pigeon Island National Park
Pigeon Island is one of only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka and offers some of the finest snorkelling in the Indian Ocean. The reef is home to blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and over 300 species of reef fish. Boat trips depart from Nilaveli beach daily; the park limits visitor numbers to protect the reef, so book your permit in advance during peak season.
Trincomalee & Fort Frederick
The historic port city of Trincomalee, 15 km south of Nilaveli, is one of the world's finest natural harbours. Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese in 1624, crowns a headland above the city and houses the sacred Koneswaram Hindu temple. The fort's ramparts offer sweeping views of the bay and are a highlight of any east coast visit.
Whale & Dolphin Watching
Trincomalee Bay is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales — the largest animals on Earth. The season runs from March to April when blue whales pass through on migration. Spinner dolphins are present year-round and often bow-ride alongside whale-watching boats. Several operators in Trincomalee and Nilaveli run morning tours.

Insider Tips
Snorkel at Pigeon Island early
The first boat of the day (8 am) has the best visibility and fewest visitors. Blacktip reef sharks are most active in the morning.
Book whale watching in advance
Blue whale tours fill up quickly in March–April. Book through a reputable operator in Trincomalee at least a week ahead.
Walk north for solitude
The further north you walk from the main resort area, the more deserted the beach becomes. Bring water and sunscreen.
Check the season carefully
Nilaveli is only accessible in the dry season (May–Sep). Outside this window, the sea is rough and most accommodation closes.
Visit Koneswaram at dawn
The Hindu temple at Fort Frederick is most atmospheric at dawn when devotees perform puja. Remove shoes before entering.
Eat fresh crab in Trinco
Trincomalee's fish market is one of the best in Sri Lanka. The restaurants nearby serve mud crab and lobster at excellent prices.
